In 2016, our presence in Spain was focused on our Upstream and Downstream businesses.

As of December 31st, 2016, we owned mineral rights to 14 blocks in Spain: four exploration blocks with a net surface area of 2,113 km2 and 10 production/development blocks with total net surface area of 332 km2.

In 2016, production totaled 0.7 Mbbl and 0.2 bscf, reaching a joint production of 0.8 Mboe (2,088 boe/d). Production was focused mainly in Casablanca, Lubina, and Montanazo in the Mediterranean Sea. Net proved oil reserves at year-end were estimated at 4.6 Mboe.

  • In the first half of 2016, we officially waived the "Canarias 1-9" blocks where Repsol was the operator with a 50% ownership interest.
  • In 2016, the production activity continued normally in Spain within the strictest safety standards.

We operate five refineries in Spain (Cartagena, A Coruña, Bilbao, Puertollano and Tarragona), which operate as a single refinery whose total distillation capacity was 896,000 barrels of oil/day in 2016.

Our refineries processed 43.3 million tons of crude in 2015, up 10% on 2014.

The average use of refining capacity was 88% in Spain, compared to 88.9% the previous year. The investments we made in the Cartagena and Bilbao refineries in previous years, in addition to the corresponding improvement in the global margin of the refining system, have positioned our company at the head of integrated European companies in terms of efficiency, guaranteed value creation, and resilience in low crude price scenarios.

In 2016, we had a network of 3,501 service stations, 29% managed by us.

Aviation and direct sales

We are fuel suppliers in the international aviation and direct sales sector. Thus, in the Aviation Fuel Logistics Services (AFLS) sector, in which we have a 50% share, we perform into-plane operations at Barajas Airport, in Madrid, and El Prat, in Barcelona.

Gas & Power

Our presence in Spain is focused on transportation, marketing, trading, and regasification of liquefied natural gas, managing all these activities from our headquarters in Madrid.

At Repsol, we are market leaders of chemical products in the Iberian Peninsula.

Production is concentrated in Spain in two petrochemical complexes located at Puertollano and Tarragona. We also have different subsidiaries and affiliates, through which we have plants dedicated to the manufacture of polypropylene compounds, chemical specialties, and synthetic rubber—this last product through Dynasol, a 50/50 alliance between Repsol and the Mexican group KUO, with plants in Latarón and Gajano.

Supply points

LPG and AutoGas

We are one of the leading liquefied petroleum gas retail distribution companies in Spain, where we distribute bottled and bulk LPG and had over four million customers in 2016.

AutoGas (automotive LPG) is the most widely-used alternative fuel in the world, in over 26 million vehicles (more than 14 million in Europe). We have 369 supply points in Spain.

Lubricants, Special Products, and Asphalts

We develop, manufacture and market oil-derived products for industrial sectors.

In September 2015, the ILBOC lubricants plant, a joint venture between SK and Repsol, was commissioned in Cartagena. This plant is the largest next-generation lubricant base facility in Europe.
